As well, for subtraction please help your child practice using the “COUNTING BACK” strategy. This means for 10-5= you start at 10 and count back 5 numbers, so 10 -> 9,8,7,6,5. 10-5=5

Homework April 12 to 16

April12

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a great Easter weekend and got to enjoy some of the sunny weather!

This week:

1)      Friday is also fruit Friday

2)    Please keep in mind that children will be playing outside more often now for playtime and gym classes as the weather is improving. They do need to remember it is important to wear warm clothing because the wind is still quite chilly. I encourage them NOT to take off their jackets outside because the tendency is to forget it outside.

3)    If your child does not know how to tie their shoelaces yet, please continue to teach them at home.

4)    Please remember each child needs to have an INDOOR and OUTDOOR pair of footwear so that mud is not tracked through the school several times a day.

We have begun a mini-unit on Dental health so our reading and vocabulary this week will reflect this.

Reading:  This week’s baggie book is “La dent de Marcel.”  Children have been given time to illustrate the contents of each page in school, so if you notice it is not complete, please have them finish it at home. Please ask them questions about the story (ie: who are the characters? Where does it take place? What happens? Etc.)

Vocab:  The vocab for this week is dental health words.  We will be working on these words for the next two weeks.

This week, please practice the following words from the envelope:

beau

beaucoup

bébé

belle

bien

blanc

bleu

bon

Also, please have your child make up sentences orally using these words.

Math: We are continuing our unit on measurement. In this unit there are many new vocabulary words. Please discuss the words long (long) and court (short),

mince (thin) and large (thick)

lourd (heavy) and léger (light) .

Help make comparisons using these groups of words with objects around your home. Ex: Le spaghetti est mince et le macaroni est large (Spagetti is thin and macaroni is thick) OR le spaghetti est plus mince que le macaroni(Spagetti is thinner than macaroni).

Have an excellent week!

March30

This week:

1) Thursday is the last day of school before Easter.  Thursday is a full day of school.

2)  Project: We are asking students to make an Easter hat to wear to school on Thursday.  This can be a hat from home that is decorated for Easter however your child wants…the more creative the better!  Please don’t go to any great expense to buy decorations, you can use whatever you have at home i.e. construction paper, cotton balls, pipe cleaners, straws, etc.  One thing to keep in mind is that the hat should not get in the way of your child completing his/her work that day.

3) Locker clean-out:  this week we will be cleaning out lockers and changes of clothing will be sent home.  Please look through the bag to make sure there is a full change of clothes in it that fits your child.  Please send a change of clothes back after Easter.

Reading:  This week’s reader is about Easter: “Le marche de Paques”

Vocab:  The page of theme words this week is Easter words again.

Math:  We have just started introducing measurement and are focusing on how LONG and how TALL various objects are.  Please try to question your child as to how tall and how long things are around the house and even comparing for example, how tall the chair is compared to how tall the fridge is i.e. which is taller?  Which is shorter? etc.

Have a great week and a great Easter holiday!

Just a reminder:

We have skating THIS FRIDAY, February 19th in the afternoon. If you plan to take your child at lunchtime and meet us at the stadium please let me know via e-mail or a note. ALSO, if you plan to take your child FROM skating please send a note so I can keep track of who will be coming back on the school bus with me. It tends to be a little chaotic at the stadium with a strict schedule time, so I want to ensure I know in advance of leaving who will be coming back to school with me. LAST BUT NOT LEAST, if you plan to attend skating with your child please accompany us in the change room so that I have everyone together. I do not want to assume that a child is with a guardian after skating if that is not the case.

Reading:

- Our weekly reader this week is ‘La Saint-Valentin des animaux’. Please have your child practice this each night.

- Please practice the Valentine vocabulary sheet in the green duotang.

Reading: Our weekly reader this week is ‘Il y a des coeurs partout!’ Please have your child read this nightly. It is really repetitive so you may want to get them to read the words out of order, or cover the illustrations to make it a little more challenging of a read for them.

Now that I have evaluated every child’s individual reading level, they will bring home a book that is at their independent reading level. Some words may still be challenging, but we have been practicing and practicing how to sound out so they should be able to sound out many unknown words now. If you do find the books too far beyond their capability please let me know and I will help them chooses something more suitable.

In the green duotang there is a Valentine vocabulary to practice.

HOMEWORK PROJECT

1) Please help your child to make a Valentine’s mailbox this week.  This can be a tissue box, shoe box or any small box decorated however your child wants, with a slot to put Valentines in.  Please have this in for our Valentine’s exchange on Friday, February 12. Please ensure your child has their name VISIBLE on the box so that other children will be able to tell who owns which box. We will be exchanging valentines during the afternoon on Friday. We will not be having any type of party for this occasion so no party snack is necessary. We will have valentine activities and exchange our Valentines in the afternoon. On Friday, I encourage all students to wear a Valentine color (red or pink) to celebrate!

2) Math:

The homework this week is to get started on the 100th day of school poster. Students are asked to create a 3-D poster using 100 objects. Use cutouts, stickers, drawings, macaroni, pictures, etc. and glue them to half a sheet of Bristol board. Group the objects by 2’s, 5’s or 10’s for easier counting and label the groups as well using numbers. The children will start presenting their projects to the class on Monday, Feb.15th and Tuesday, Feb.16th so please return the poster to school by then. Merci!

Have a wonderful week!!

Please note that Scholastic book orders are due back by Thursday  of this week.

Our first skating session will be February 19. Please feel free to come along, there will be many pairs of skates to be tied! Please note that students must have a CSA approved helmet as well as mittens or gloves in order to be permitted on the ice. If your child does not have skates, please let me know ASAP so I can check to see if Mr. Baggs has any available.

Reading: Our weekly book is ‘Les manchots empereurs’. Your child is also changing their baggy book daily now.

I am still reading with children daily to identify their independent reading level. A note, e-mail or phone call will follow once I have read with everyone to update you on how your child is progressing.

Writing: Again this week there is a scrambled sentences sheet.  Your child will need to cut out the pieces of each sentence and glue them onto the sheet provided in the right order.  There are 4 separate sentences all about penguins. These contain words that your child should have no trouble with at this point. Emphasize that the word starting with an upper-case letter is always first and the last word is the one with the period. The instructions will also be on one of the worksheets. Please ensure your child illustrates one of these sentences and colors it.

Math: We have now moved onto subtraction. With objects and words, have your child create math story problems where they are taking some objects away from the group. For example, there are 10 pencils. I give 4 to mom, how many are left?

HAVE A GREAT WEEK J

Bonjour!

PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE WILL BE A HAT FOR HAITI DAY TOMORROW, CHILDREN ARE ASKED TO WEAR A HAT AND DONATE $2

From what I have seen so far, the new writing component of the homework this week seems to have gone very well!  Please ensure you check your child’s homework so that it is completely done. Many homework sheets can back not completely done, therefore could you please initial the bottom of the page so that I can see it has been checked. Thank you J When it is completely done I will give them a sticker.

I have copied a class list for everyone so that you have all the names in case you want to make Valentines. Details on Valentines day and the 100th day of school will follow in a couple of weeks.

We are going to be starting our skating sessions in February!  When the dates are made available to us, a note will go to you.

Reading:

Our class reader this week is “Le manchot Adélie.”  This book is all about Adelie penguins.  We will also be learning about this type of penguin in class this week.

Just a reminder about the other baggie books:  your child should be bringing home a new book each night to read.

It is now time for reading evaluations as we are soon coming to another report card season.  When your child has been assessed, I will be in touch with you either by phone or email (I’m sure everyone is getting curious to know how your child is doing).  So it’s not necessarily a bad thing if you get a phone call or an e-mail!  J

Writing:

For this week, I have a scrambled sentences sheet.  Your child will need to cut out the pieces of each sentence and glue them onto the sheet provided in the right order.  There are 4 separate sentences all about penguins.

Example:  Ils       colonie.      forment     une

This sentence should be put in the following order:  Ils forment une colonie.

Emphasize that the word starting with an upper-case letter is always first and the last word is the one with the period.

The instructions will also be on one of the worksheets.

Math:

Make up some addition and subtraction story problems (word problems) to tell your child and ask he/she to find out the answer.

For example:  “There are three spoons on the table.  We need one more spoon.  Tell me how many spoons we need all together.” Or there are 4 cookies, I ate 2, how many cookies are left?

Your child should answer “3 plus 1 equals 4.  We need 4 spoons all together.”

Then write:  3+1=4

Sound we are focusing on this week: on and om

HOMEWORK

Reading :

1. The weekly reader this week is <<Je connais les manchots>>.

Please practice this and the book your child brings home nightly. If you find your child is memorizing this book, try reading the pages out of order.  You could also go through the book picking random words for your child to read.  If he/she is experiencing difficulty with these activities after a couple of days, please let me know. Your child should be trying to sound out unknown words by breaking them down into small sections.

Also, we are progressing with our individual reading program.  Your child should be changing his/her baggie book daily or every couple of days (not the weekly reader).  Please feel free to let me know if your child is having difficulty with their books or even if you feel the books are too easy.  Starting today, I will be assessing individual reading ability, which takes quite a bit of time.  So your feedback from home is always appreciated.

2. The vocabulary sheet for this week will be the penguin sheet passed out last week. Please review these words at home as well as the winter words from the previous sheet.

Writing : I am beginning some simple writing homework this week. The children have been writing simple sentences on their own for some time now. Please find the writing homework sheet in the green duotang with an explanation.  If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to call or e-mail me.

If your child has extreme difficulty with this activity, please let me know.

I also ask that your child illustrate and color one of the sentences on bottom of the page and color.

Math: This week we are learning about doubles addition. A double addition is when you add 2 equal groups. Find things or pictures that have doubles (gloves, egg carton..) and ask your child to tell you the addition sentence to go with the doubles, for example and egg carton would have an addition sentence of 6+6=12 because there are 6 eggs on each side.

Have a fantastic week !

  • Your child has a book at their individual reading level now. Please practice this nightly. If there is a particular word you do not know, you can write it in a sticky note and attach it to the book and I can tell them the next day.
  • When reading, please encourage your child to sound out difficult words by focusing on sounds they recognize within the word,

For example: autobus -> au is o  to is to         bus is bus

Vocabulary: In the green duotang there is a penguin (manchot) vocabulary sheet. Please review this nightly with your child. We will practice this daily in class as well. Feel free to practice older sheets to refresh their memory J

Math: We have started a unit on addition and subtraction. We are learning that addition is combining objects and subtraction is separating. Please see sheet sent home in the green duotang stating what we will cover.

Some suggested activities for you to do to reinforce what we are doing in class are:

1)      Have your child make up addition story problems with pictures or small objects. For example 3 dogs are playing together and along came 2 others who also wanted to play. How many dogs were there in all (en tout)? They can represent this using an addition sentence (3+2=5 and/or an illustration or an object like pennies, buttons or macaroni.

2)    As well, give your child a scenario and have them tell you if it is an addition or subtraction story using the symbol + or -. You may also use the words combining (ajouter or joindre) or separating (enlèver) with them.

Have a great week!

HAPPY NEW YEAR and welcome back!!

Reading: The weekly reader is “Mon bonhomme de neige”, please practice this nightly.

As well, your child should have a class book in their J’aime lire folder. Please have them read this to the best of their ability nightly.  Students will now choose books on their individual reading level. They will change these books 2-3 times per week. Please note: A general rule of thumb is that if there are 4 or more words on a page that they cannot decode the book is too difficult. If you are finding this, please return the book with a note to let me know that the book is too difficult.

This will be our last week with Plus de pratique pour les sons. Please have your child review all pages of this booklet.

Vocabulary: Please find a new vocabulary sheet (winter words) in the green duotang to practice this week.

Phonics: We will be reviewing the following sounds at school this week: eu ou     eau/au        er/é/et/es/ai

Homework Week 4: October 19 - 22

Bonjour!  This week we are learning the sound “é” pronounced “eh”.

This week:

School is closed for students on Friday, October 23 for teacher professional development.  Recycling will be postponed to next week.

Please remember if you need to come into the school building, parents/guardians need to get a Visitor’s button from the office first.

Thank you!!

Homework activities:

1.    Language:

In the green homework folder, we are continuing to practice the page of Halloween vocabulary.  Please have your child practice identifying these objects (en français).  The folder is to be returned EVERY FRIDAY MORNING.

In the sound booklet, please practice the last two pages with your child this week.  Please also review all the previous pages as we will be beginning our new sound booklet next week.  I suggest practicing the out of order so that it is not only done from memory of the song. Your child should now be more comfortable with the sound blends and be able to identify most of them fairly consistently.  The Friday morning classroom “dictée” over the weeks to come will focus on these sound blends from our sound booklets.

2.    Reading:

This week’s little book (petit livre) is “Halloween.”  We will practice reading this book every day in class as well as at home.  It is very important for your child to bring the “J’aime lire” folder to school every day with the 2 baggie books in it.  He/she will bring the folder home each night. Please record on the log sheet only those books your child reads in French with or without your assistance at this time.

For each night that your child has his/her books, here are some suggested activities:

P     Start by doing a picture walk: “walking” through the book and looking at the pictures, trying to understand what the book is about.

P     The next time you read, try to find any words with the sound “é” in them, or “a” or “u”, etc..

P     At this stage it is important for your child to learn to point to words and try to say them based on the picture and beginning sound.  Try to do this on the third night.

P     On the fourth night, try reading the book start to finish.

3.    Math:

Some suggested activities are as follows:

a.      With your child, collect sets of 11 to 20 objects (for example, 12 stuffed animals, 16 envelopes).  Have your child count the objects.  Ask: “How many are there in each set (groupe)?”

b.      Play “I Spy,” giving the number as a clue: “I spy with my little eye, something that has four legs.”  Your child might guess “table” or “chair.”  Switch roles.

Have a great week!!!
