Bonjour!  There will no longer be any homework.

All I ask is that the children continue to read nighly.  If there is any unfinished work in school, I will be sending it home to finish, but this should decrease over the next week.

The green homework books can be kept at home along with any finished work that I send.

Merci beaucoup!

Reading:  This week’s baggie book is “ Des câlins”

Our caterpillars are growing larger and larger each day and some are prepared to make their chrysalis.

Vocab:  A new vocabulary sheet with the parts of the body is in the green duotang to practice.

Par

    Rouge

Pas

Ses

Petit/petite

S’il te plait

Pour

S’il vous plait

Quatre

Six

Que/qui

soeur

Math:.

We have begun our last math unit for this year on adding and subtracting to 20. Help your child practice adding using the “COUTING ON” strategy. This means for 9+6= you keep the larger number in your head and count on 6 more with the help of their fingers; 9…10,11,12,13,14,15. 9+6=15.

As well, for subtraction please help your child practice using the “COUNTING BACK” strategy. This means for 10-5= you start at 10 and count back 5 numbers, so 10 -> 9,8,7,6,5. 10-5=5

Have an excellent week!

Bonjour!

We have caterpillars (les chenilles) in our classroom!  We will watch them grow (grandir), molt (changer la peau), make a chrysalis (faire une chrysalide) and transform into butterflies (se transformer en papillons)!

Vocab:  Our vocabulary sheet this week shows the words for parts of both the caterpillar and butterfly.  On the back of the sheet is an explanation of the life cycle of the butterfly.  While reviewing the vocab, please also have your child read (as best they can) the explanation on the back.

The words to focus on from the brown envelope are below.  I suggest using words in the envelope to piece together sentences.  I have noticed that they like to make “silly” sentences and this may also make the activity more fun.

Il
Il y a
Ils
J’ai
jaune
Je
Je suis
joli
jolie
jouet

Writing:  There is no written homework for this week.

Math: We are starting geometry.  Have a look around your house and maybe in the neighbourhood while driving for things in the shape of a cube, sphere, cone, cylinder and rectangular prism.

Welcome back!  I hope you all had a wonderful Easter!

This week  Book orders are going home today and are due back on FRIDAY APRIL 16th.

Also, we are going to be doing an activity which involves brushing our teeth in school.  On Friday, could you please send in a tooth brush for your child to use.  It will be brought home again that day.  If it is not possible, I will have some (unused) extras on hand.

Reading:  This week’s reader is “La dent de Marcel”- a book about a little boy who lost his tooth at school.  This book is different because the students are the illustrators.  Your child can work on his/her illustrations at home but the work DOES NOT need to be completed at home…I will be giving class time for this as well.

Vocab:  The vocabulary sheet this week contains words regarding dental health.  We will be focusing on these words for the next two weeks (April is dental health month).

Sight words:  From the brown envelope this week, please focus on the following words:

beau
beaucoup

Homework Week 25: March 29-April 1

March29

This week:

1) Thursday is the last day of school before Easter.  Thursday is a full day of school.

2)  Project: We are asking students to make an Easter hat to wear to school on Thursday.  This can be a hat from home that is decorated for Easter however your child wants…the more creative the better!  Please don’t go to any great expense to buy decorations, you can use whatever you have at home i.e. construction paper, cotton balls, pipe cleaners, straws, etc.  One thing to keep in mind is that the hat should not get in the way of your child completing his/her work that day.

3) Locker clean-out:  this week we will be cleaning out lockers and changes of clothing will be sent home.  Please look through the bag to make sure there is a full change of clothes in it that fits your child.  Please send a change of clothes back after Easter.

Reading:  This week’s reader is about Easter: “Le marche de Paques”

Vocab:  The new page of theme words was put in the green homework folders on Friday (Easter words).

Math:  We have just started introducing measurement and are focusing on how LONG and how TALL various objects are.  Please try to question your child as to how tall and how long things are around the house and even comparing for example, how tall the chair is compared to how tall the fridge is i.e. which is taller?  Which is shorter? etc.

Have a great week and a great Easter holiday!

Homework Week 21: March 1 - 5, 2010

March1
Bonjour!
Our new calendars went home today and our skating days are marked on it. Our next session is this Friday afternoon. As with last time, please send me a note or email in the morning on Friday to let me know if you will be picking your child up from the arena. Also, please pack an extra drink to take skating.  A big thank you to parents/grand-parents who were able to help out last time!

March is nutrition month and in recognition we are encouraging students to bring fruit for snack on Fridays during this month (“Fruit Fridays”).

*Also, we are going to be doing some activities using pictures of groceries/food. If you have any extra flyers or pictures that can be cut up around, could you please send them in? (Thank you!!!)

Reading:  Our baggie book this week is “Souricette a faim.”  This book has names of some fruits and vegetables as well as number words.

Vocabulary:  Our vocab sheet this week is action words. Practice getting your child to make up sentences orally or written using the action words.

Math:
Subtraction stories. Have your child answer subtraction story problems you make up using objects from around the house. For example: There are 9 spoons in the drawer. I take out 4. Tell me how many are left in the drawer. Have them explain how they know it is subtraction, not addition (you are taking away some/ you are adding more to the group). Have them make up some subtraction stories and you can answer.

Homework Week 20: February 22-26

February22

This week: Book fair on Tuesday at 8:55 and is open to families on Saturday. I will not be sending home book orders this month due to the book fair.

No skating this week.

Vocabulary: This week we have a new vocab sheet with weather words. Please practice it this week because next week we will have a new one.
Reading:  This week’s petit livre is “En hiver.” I have finished all my reading assessments and I will be in touch with parents in the next day or so if I haven’t already.
Writing:  There is no written homework this week.

Math:

Try showing a quantity of objects (blocks, noodles, etc.) and have your child count how many there are. Then close their eyes and cover up some of the objects. When your child opens their eyes, have them figure out how many objects you are covering up using subtraction. Then write an equation to show what you just did.

Example: Show 8 noodles. Cover up 3. Ask: “How many noodles am I hiding?” Child: 5. “How do you know?” 8 - ___ = 3

I know that if I start with 8 and only have 3 left, then 5 must be covered up.

Homework Week 19: February 15-19

February16

Our first skating session is on Friday at the CBS Arena.  Parents are encouraged to come.  If you will be taking your child from the arena, I need a note in the morning that day.  This is to avoid confusion and to ensure your child brings their school bag to the arena.

Before you leave the arena with your child, please check in with me to let me know you are leaving.

We also ask that you stay with our class in the same dressing room to get skates on/off.  When we get to the arena, there will be a change room with my name on it.  Please go to this room.

Homework:

Reading:  The class book this week is “La saint-valentin des animaux.”  This is a little more challenging than last week’s book.

Please continue to practice the sheet of vocab from last week.

Homework Week 18: February 8-12

February8

Reading:  The class book for this week is “Il y a des coeurs partout” which coincides with our focus on Valentine’s Day.

I have noticed on the reading logs that many people are writing down vocab sheets.  Please record baggie books only.  Also, if your child is bringing home books that they have already read, please let me know, as this should not be happening.

There is also a new vocab sheet with Valentine’s words and a class list in the green homework folder.  Please practice the new vocab words this week.

Math:

The homework this week is to get started on the 100th day of school poster. Students are asked to create a 3-D poster using 100 objects. Use cutouts, stickers, drawings, macaroni, pictures, etc. and glue them to half a sheet of Bristol board. Group the objects by 2’s, 5’s or 10’s for easier counting and label the groups as well using numbers. The children will start presenting their projects to the class on Monday, Feb.15th and Tuesday, Feb.16th so please return the poster to school then. Merci!

FINALLY, please help your child to make a Valentine’s mailbox this week.  This can be a tissue box or shoe box decorated however your child wants, with a slot to put Valentines in.  Please have this in for our Valentine’s exchange on Friday, February 12.

We will be exchanging Valentines during the afternoon of February 12.  We also have gym that afternoon.  On this day, students are encouraged (not obligated) to wear red or pink to celebrate.  There is no need to send a party snack because our afternoon is interrupted by the gym schedule and we won’t have time to eat as well.

Have a great week!

Homework Week 17: February 1-5

February1

Bonjour!

Our first skating session is coming up.  All parents/grandparents are welcome!  The more helping hands, the better.

Reading:

Our class reader this week is “Le manchot Empereur.”  This book is all about Emperor penguins.  We will also be learning about this type of penguin in class this week.

Just a reminder about the other baggie books:  your child should be bringing home a new book each night.

It is now time for reading evaluations as we are soon coming to another report card season.  When your child has been assessed, I will be in touch with you either by phone or email (I’m sure everyone is getting curious to know how your child is doing).  So its not necessarily a bad thing if you get a phone call!  J

Writing:

For this week, I have a scrambled sentences sheet, just like last week.  Your child will need to cut out the pieces of each sentence and glue them onto the sheet provided in the right order.  There are 4 separate sentences all about penguins.

Example:  Ils       colonie.      forment     une

This sentence should be put in the following order:  Ils forment une colonie.

Emphasize that the word starting with an upper-case letter is always first and the last word is the one with the period.

The instructions will also be on one of the worksheets.  Some children are forgot to illustrate and color a picture.  This also needs to be finished this week.

Math:

Ask your child to think of some objects at home that are doubles.  We have been learning about doubles i.e. 1+1, 2+2, 3+3, etc.

Homework Week 16: January 25-29

January21

Bonjour!

From what I have seen so far, the new writing component of the homework this week seems to have gone well!  Please feel free to give me some feedback if you have the time.

We missed our last Art Smarts session on the 21st due to the snow day, so we will do our best to have a make up session soon.

We are soon going to be starting our skating sessions!  When the dates are made available to us, a note will go to you.

Reading:

Our class reader this week is “Le manchot Adélie.”  This book is all about Adelie penguins.

For example:  “There are three spoons on the table.  We need one more spoon.  Tell me how many spoons we need all together.”

Your child should answer “3 plus 1 equals 4.  We need 4 spoons all together.”

Then write:  3+1=4

Homework Week 15: January 18-22

January18

Reading:

This week’s reader is “Je connais les manchots.”  This book should contain many familiar words.

If you find your child is memorizing this book, try reading the pages out of order.  You could also go through the book picking random words for your child to read.  If he/she is experiencing difficulty with these activities after a couple of days, please let me know.

Also, we are progressing with our individual reading program.  Your child should be changing his/her baggie book daily (not the weekly reader).  Please feel free to let me know if your child is having difficulty with their books or even if you feel the books are too easy.  Starting today, I will be assessing individual reading ability, which takes quite a bit of time.  So your feedback from home is always appreciated.

 Writing:

This week there is a writing activity in the green homework folder (instructions are also on the sheet).  Your child needs to use the winter vocabulary in the homework folder to write a sentence on his/her own.  I have provided some examples.  If your child is capable of writing more than one sentence, they are welcome to do so.

If your child has extreme difficulty with this activity, please let me know.

I also ask that your child illustrate one of the sentences on bottom of the page and color.

Math:

We have been making up addition stories about dinosaures.  Ask your child to tell you an addition story about dinosaures that he/she made up.  Use small objects like buttons or paper clips to make up another addition story together.

Example:  2 dinosaures were drinking water.  2 more dinosaures came to join them.  How many dinosaures were at the water hole together?

Homework Week 14: January 11-15

January11

Homework activities:

We are finished with the sound booklet - “Plus de pratique pour les sons.”  If you would like to keep this booklet at home over the week for review, you are encouraged to do so.

Please return it to school with a little note indicating “J’ai fini” when you are finished with it. Merci!

1.    Language:

We will continue this week with the vocab list of winter words. As well, there is a new vocab sheet with words about penguins (les manchots).  We will be reviewing these and the winter words regularly during class time over the month of January. The students have now begun to write simple sentences on their own. We are using our winter words to help us with this.

We have begun to gradually introduce our high frequency word list to the students. A copy of this list was sent home on Curriculum night. Your child may already be able to read and/or recognize words from this list. I will send home an additional copy later this month. If you do have your copy, it may be a good idea to ask your child from time to time to read to you the words that they can recognize.

2.    Reading:

This week’s little book (petit livre) is “1,2,3 les manchots jouent.”  We will practice reading this book every day in class as well as at home.  It is very important for your child to bring the “J’aime lire” folder to school every day with the 2 baggie books in it.  He/she will bring the folder home each night. It is important to remember that your child may not be able to read all the words in this petit livre independently. There are some penguin  vocab words they will know as well as some high frequency words.

In addition to the daily reader (1,2,3 les manchots jouent) the students will now get to choose a new “baggie book” each morning when they arrive at school. This book is theirs to choose based on what interests them. They should attempt to read these books each evening and it may be recorded in their J’aime Lire folder. The books that they choose should be at or near their current reading level.  Many of the children like to choose the same book time and time again. While it is good for them to develop a sense of confidence with their reading, please drop me a line and let me know if a particular title seems to be coming home quite often. Sometimes a student will learn to memorize a book, as opposed to attempt new words with the reading strategies that they have. If your child is consistently stuggling with the books that they are choosing, please also let me know so that we can choose a book that is more appropriate for them.

Here are some ideas on how you can “read” your baggie book each evening:

Weekly Baggie Book

1st time - Picture Walk - only look at the pictures and have your child try to predict what will happen using the French vocab that they know.

2nd time - Point / Read familiar words

Find the word with the sound…….

3rd time - Read story

4th Time – Read story without picture clues

3.    Math:

This week we are getting into our next unit in Mathematics. In this unit, your child will be learning about addition and subtraction to 12. The Learning Goals for this unit are to:

* learn more about the meaning of numbers

* recognize that addition involves joining groups and that subtraction involves taking one group away from another.

* use counters and other real-life materials to help solve simple number problems.

* practise using addition and subtraction to write and solve number problems.

* describe the thinking involved in solving simple number problems.

* use mental-math strategies to add and subtract.

This week you can begin to reinforce this activity at home by practicing to make number combinations to 5 and then to 10. Choose 5 or 10 items (ex: paper clips, pennies etc.) and place them on a table. Have your child move the items around to find all the combinations they can make. ex: For 5,  2+3; 4+1; 5+0; 3+2; 1+4; 0+5. Have your child record their combinations on a sheet of paper.

Homework Week 10: November 30 – December 5

November29

Report cards were sent home today.  If for some reason your child’s report didn’t make it home, please let me know ASAP.

I have not received all the November book orders yet but I had to send home the December one today because the order must be placed Wednesday to ensure delivery before Christmas holidays.

1. Language:

Please review the vocabulary sheet for “noël” with your child.

We are learning about the sound “OU” this week:  pronounced “ew” (well, close to thatJ).

Phonics:

We have a new sound booklet this week - “Plus de pratique pour les sons.”  This booklet blends two consonants with a vowel.  Please practice the first two pages (pg 1 and 2) from this booklet with your child this week.  As an additional practice for your child at home, you may use the syllables from this booklet in a dictée at home.  Have your child print the syllable you read to them.  You may want to do this once or twice a week.  The words we will be using in our upcoming dictées will be taken from this booklet.

You may choose to keep the “Je lis” booklet at home if your child needs to continue practicing this as review.  Please return it to school with a little note saying “Jai fini” when you are finished with it.  Merci!

2.Reading:

This week’s little book (petit livre) is “Les couleurs de noël.”  Please have your child color the items on the page that need to be colored.  For example, on page one, it says “Noël c’est les bottes noires de père noël” so Santa’s boots need to be colored black.

3. Math:

We are moving on to numbers between 11 and 20.  It is important that your child recognize and identify these numbers easily now.  Make flash cards with each number and play a game finding each number, or flip the card quickly and have your child name the number.  You can also do a practice dictée with the numbers where your child writes down the number they hear.

11 onze,  12 douze, 13 treize, 14 quatorze, 15 quinze, 16 seize, 17 dix-sept, 18 dix-huit, 19 dix-neuf, 20 vingt

Homework Week 8: November 17 - 20

November17

1. Language:

Please review the vocabulary sheet for la nuit this week.

Our new petit livre this week is “Le rêve de Mathieu.”  On Wednesday, I will send home the words from the book, enlarged.  Please cut these up, and you and your child can use them to re-create some of the sentences from the book.  He/she can also make their own sentences using these words.  The purpose of this activity is to further understand that different words put together make messages.  It will also help with sentence writing.

Phonics:

We are continuing this week in our phonics program with the sound “o” (oh).

Please practice the last two pages  of the “Je lis” sound booklet (pg 7 and 8 ) with your child this week.  As an additional practice for your child at home, you may use the words from this booklet in a dictée at home.  Have your child print the word that you read to them.  You may want to do this once or twice a week.  The words that we use in our dictées at school are currently taken from the Je lis booklet.

2.Reading:

This week’s little book (petit livre) is “Le rêve de Mathieu.”  It contains some nighttime vocabulary words as well as high frequency words that your child should recognize independently.

3. Math:

Please practice the concept of un de plus (one more) and un de moins (one less) with your child this week.

Ten frames are being sent home for practice.

*ex:  use pennies as counters, have your child show you 7 on the 10-frame (grille de 10).  Then ask them to show you one more than 7 and then one less than 7.  Have your child show you how to properly put counters on the 10 frame and how to properly take them off.  We have been practicing this daily at school.  Once you have mastered one more and one less, move on to two more and two less.

We have a new sound booklet “Je lis.”  This book takes the sounds we have been learning and combines them to make words.  Please practice the next two pages (pg 3 and 4) with your child this week. 2.      Reading:

This week’s little book (petit livre) is “Que font-ils?.”  We will practice reading this book every day in class as well as at home.  It is very important for your child to bring the “J’aime lire” folder to school every day with the 2 baggie books in it.  He/she will bring the folder home each night. It is important to remember that your child may not be able to read all the words in this petit livre independently. The children are asked not to colour in this booklet as we are practicing recognizing the colour words without the visual of the colours themselves. Merci!

3.  Math:

The following are some activities you can work on at home to reinforce the math outcomes this week.

a)  Use small objects (ex: pennies, macaroni etc.) Ask your child to show you groups from 11 to 20.

Homework Week 4: October 19 - 22

October18

Bonjour!  This week we are learning the sound “é” pronounced “eh”.

This week:

School is closed for students on Friday, October 23 for teacher professional development.  Recycling will be postponed to next week.

Please remember if you need to come into the school building, parents/guardians need to get a Visitor’s button from the office first.

Thank you!!

Homework activities:

1.    Language:

In the green homework folder, we are continuing to practice the page of Halloween vocabulary.  Please have your child practice identifying these objects (en français).  The folder is to be returned EVERY FRIDAY MORNING.

In the sound booklet, please practice the last two pages with your child this week.  Please also review all the previous pages as we will be beginning our new sound booklet next week.  Your child should now be more comfortable with the sound blends and be able to identify most of them fairly consistently.  The Friday morning classroom “dictée” over the weeks to come will focus on these sound blends from our sound booklets.

2.    Reading:

This week’s little book (petit livre) is “Halloween.”  We will practice reading this book every day in class as well as at home.  It is very important for your child to bring the “J’aime lire” folder to school every day with the 2 baggie books in it.  He/she will bring the folder home each night.

For each night that your child has his/her books, here are some suggested activities:

P     Start by doing a picture walk: “walking” through the book and looking at the pictures, trying to understand what the book is about.

P     The next time you read, try to find any words with the sound “e” in them.

P     At this stage it is important for your child to learn to point to words and try to say them based on the picture and beginning sound.  Try to do this on the third night.

P     On the fourth night, try reading the book start to finish.

3.    Math:

Some suggested activities are as follows:

a.      With your child, collect sets of 11 to 20 objects (for ecample, 12 stuffed animals, 16 envelopes).  Have your child count the objects.  Ask: “How many are there in each set (groupe)?”

b.     Play “I Spy,” giving the number as a clue: “I spy with my little eye, something that has four legs.”  Your child might guess “table” or “chair.”  Switch roles.

Have a great week!!!
